The picture above was one of the proudest days of my life. In the summer of 2015 I successfully completed the physically and mentally grueling Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP 1) and earned the honor of wearing the tan beret of the Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment.

Did I know I was going to succeed? Hell no. Prior to enlisting in the Army in September 2014 I was just a regular guy. I worked in a cubicle for a green appliance start up. In fact, I didn’t even know I was going to be sent to Ranger selection until a few weeks prior.

One of my platoon sergeants in Combat Medic school had sensed the potential in me and asked me if I wanted to go. I wanted to test myself, but I was afraid.

I told him I’d think about it.

He signed me up anyway. I found out a day before I graduated medical training in Ft. Sam Houston.

“I think you can handle it,” said my platoon sergeant with an unnervingly sadistic grin on his face.

A few weeks later I found myself in Ft. Benning, Georgia getting put through the wringer. I was still unsure of myself, but gaining confidence each day as I performed much better than I thought I was capable of.

To this day I’m extremely thankful that I had a leader and a mentor who was able to see something in myself that I could not. He knew I was ready for the challenge and gave me the nudge that I needed to step into my power and realize that there was a badass motherfucker within me, just waiting for the chance to break free.
